WORD WALL GAMES

KINESTHETIC REMEDIAL READING STRATEGIES
(Thanks to Teri Wilson and Reading Recovery for the idea)

Objective: Reading Recovery strategies come alive when students use the techniques kinesthetically.

Cognitive Link: The brain is a pattern seeker. Repetition anchors learning. Use the pattern 10-24-7. Retention of memory is increased when learning is retrieved in 10 minutes later, 24 hours later, and 7 days later causing increased myelination of the axons.

Academic Concepts: Word recognition

Equipment: Sentence strips, markers, butcher paper

Organization: Students work in small groups. Each group has markers and a long strip of butcher paper.

Anticipatory Set: Teacher's Quote: "Let's pretend that we are miniature people walking on a page in a book. We can act out what the words tell us."

Activity: Word Wall

As words are introduced in lessons, they are added to the word wall. Example: Aerobic, oxygen, glucose, jump, and gallop. These words are used in sentences from stories read like Jump Frog, Jump, Quick as a Cricket, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, e...

Hopping Sentences
Students use the markers to write sentences in big letters on the butcher paper. Students then act out the words on the paper. For example: "Jump frog, jump", "I can skip and jump."

Pathway Mat: Cross lateral patterns for pathways and balance. Students trace around their hands and feet with different color markers on the butcher paper, large plastic tablecloth, or plastic shower curtain liner to create different pathways and patterns to follow.

Closure: Teacher's Quote: "You can make your own personal dictionary with action words that make you healthy and strong. You can also make a pathway mat at home."
