Fitness Ball

Howie Weiss
Physical Education Teacher
Kingsbury School, Bayside NY

Distribute one ball to each student. Use soccer, basketballs, playground balls, gator skin balls, nerf balls, etc.

On the "go" signal, the students pick a locomotor skill. They perform this skill while manipulating their ball.

On a given signal, they exchange equipment with another student.

  • The object is to get a new piece of equipment each time.
  • If they get the same kind of ball, they will attempt a different locomotor skill or a different way of manipulating the ball.
  • Every three to five minutes give a brief rest period.
  • Choose students to show how they were manipulating their ball.

Variations:

  1. Score one point for each new piece of equipment.
  2. Score one point for performing each locomotor skill.
  3. Work with partners. Students share equipment or play follow the leader.
