Winter Wonderland

Felice Cloyd
Highland Park Elementary, Bloomington, IN

Here is something that I do during the winter months. I usually try to have 4 stations.

  • Station 1
    • Snow Ball Fight.
      • I set up 2 tumbling mats on their ends some distance across from each other to make snow forts and use yarn balls as snow balls.
      • Of course, I remind the kids that they could not do this at school during recess and it was really all in fun. It's not really a fight.
        • I guess you could rename it "Snow Ball Fun."
          • I had to laugh one year when a kindergarten asked me what a snowball fight was. They had never heard of it before and then I remembered that we had not had a lot of snow in this child's life. So of course he didn't know what a snowball fight was!
  • Station 2
    • Sleigh Ride
      • One student was the horse with a short rope(the reins) around his/her waist and another was a rider on a carpet square turned upside down (this seems to help it slide better).
      • The rider holds the reins and says "giddy up" The horse pulls the rider across the gym and they switch places.
  • Station 3:
    • Ice Hockey
      • Students try scoring using a hockey stick and puck through cones or a hockey goal while "skating" on cut up carpet pieces or using shoe boxes as skates.
  • Station 4:
    • Skiing
      • Have students on small carpet pieces or use shoe boxes as skiis and wands as poles and make a zig zag course with cones to have them ski through the course.
