I was introduced to the Sport Safety Training Handbook when I taught
my first Sport Safety Training class (SST). SST is normally a seven
hour class with certifications for both adult and child CPR and first
aid basic techniques.
The Sport Safety Training Handbook is broken down into two sections,
injury prevention and treatment guidelines. This book is small and pocket
sized; it fits perfectly in a medical kit for quick reference to injury
prevention and treatment techniques. This book is mainly targeted to
any individual associated with athletic populations, coaches, physical
educators, and athletic trainers to name a few.
Part one highlights injury prevention as it relates to coach's responsibilities,
musculoskeletal injuries, emergency situations, and return to play criteria.
Part two is an emergency reference guide. All emergencies are listed
in alphabetical order to allow for a quick reference when needed. I
like the ease at which a reader can find topics of interest. Each section
is highlighted and bolded for easier convenience. Picture diagrams are
also placed throughout the book for quick refreshment of emergency techniques.
This participant's handbook is an integral part of the American Red
Cross Sport Safety Training course. By itself, it does not constitute
complete and comprehensive training for first aid. Also, the procedures
outlined in this book reflect the standards of knowledge and accepted
emergency practices in the United States at the time the book was published.
It is the readers responsibility to remain up to date on the current
changes being made in the emergency care procedures.
Please contact your Red Cross chapter or station for purchasing information
on this book and information on course offerings related to Sport Safety
Training. Visit the American Red Cross website at www.redcross.org
