PLATOSPORT: MATCH ANALYSIS APP: Dr Grant Abt and I (Dr Lee Nelson) have just released a notational analysis iPhone/iPod Touch app called PLATOSPORT. The app allows you to record up to five 'layers' of information during a match (Player, Location, Action, Time, Outcome - hence the name of the app). Eight sports are supported (American Football, Aussie Rules, Basketball, Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Soccer). However, if you don't need to record where an event occurred then the app can be used with any sport. Find out more in the forum.
FITNESS CENTER DAYS: In high school, we would go to the fitness center 2 days a week. Any thoughts on this? It really helped out the kids with building self-esteem, plus getting them in shape. Some of the kids didn't want to participate in games in the gymnasium, but when we went to the fitness center they would participate like crazy! Even if all they did was walk/run on the treadmill the whole time. I think this is good for P.E class. Please share in the forum.
DANCE IN PE: When I was in high school we had a dance section. It was only for a couple weeks but its something that I remember. I am thinking about putting dance into my classroom. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts of how there class went if they added dance into the curriculam? Please share in the forum.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS OR SPORTS: I am a physical education major at Slippery Rock University and have been a camp counselor at a private school during the summers. At their school they offer Physical Education to the high school students OR they are allowed to participate on a sports team. In my experience of playing sports in junior high and high school, there were many times that there were a few team members who barely played, while others were the stars of the team. How should those students who don't get much playing time benefit? Would it be smarter for the school to just simply require all students to take a physical education class and then let them decide if they'd like to play a sport as well? Please share in the forum.
GETTING EVERYONE INVOLVED... I remember throughout high school there would always be a group of girls and boys that just didn't participate, particularly noticable during game play. They wouldn't participate for example because they didn't want to get their clothes sweaty, or the girls didn't want to mess their hair up, or for whatever other reason they had there always seemed to be a group of people who didn't participate during game play. What methods should be taken to get everyone involved in game play? Please share in the forum.
FITNESS TESTING: I have heard various ways to fitness test at the middle school and high school levels. One topic that comes up when fitness testing is students feeling uncomfortable around their peers. Some teachers have done the testing in stations so only a small group of students are together while others have kept the whole class together. Do you think that fitness testing would be more beneficial if done individually? Or do you think this would be a waste of time? Please share in the forum.
TECHNOLOGY BAN IN PE: I am currently a phys ed major and a future educator in phys ed. I'm in a technology class called Technology Pete (Technology in physical education teaching education.) It's no doubt technology plays a huge role in our everday lives but I believe there is too much use of technology in todays phys ed curriculum. Too much technology in phys ed takes away from motor engaged time (The total amount of time a student is engaged in physical activity for the class). I believe Phys ed needs to keep the traditions and ban technology. If not ban technology then reduce it in schools significantly. Are there any solutions to this problem? Please share in the forum.
SEPERATION OF THE SEXES: At my high school there were many days that the boys and girls were separated due to the activity that was planned; ex: boys played hockey but the girls were not allowed due to aggressiveness. As an upcoming physical educator with many things changing in the world of physical education, should this belief still be put into use or at this point in time should the boys and girls be able to participate in whatever the activity/sport may be? Please share in the forum.
REFUSAL TO PARTICIPATE IN PE: I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or strategies in dealing with students who refuse to participate in P.E. even after you have sent them to the office or called home. Any thoughts? Please share in the forum.
