I teach 7th through 12th grade PE. I read Dr.John Ratey's book (SPARK) along with Dr.John Medina's book (BRAIN RULES)and I was inspired for the PE field. I'm trying to get my school board to understand this research. Is there anyone out there who has been successful trying this? If so, was there something particular that conviced them? Thank you in advance for replying |

Shawn: I gave each member of our BOE and our Superintendent a copy of "SPARK", and while the response has been slow, a couple of them said they found it to be a remarkable book. The BOE is more open than the super. although he has now thrown his weight behind a joint use agreement for the district to get all the school playgrounds open. Take the salient points from those two books and go before your BOE and keep pushing the value of PE for health and for academic growth. Write a letter to the editor and/or make contact with various media and ask, "Hey, do you know." Its working, painfully slow, but its working in Fresno. |

I was part of a team that went to Naperville last year and took the Superintendent, PE teachers, board members, parents, and a few other community leaders along. Although they did not leave with a desire to totally replicate the program in Naperville, it certainly opened their eyes and energized them to recognize the impact a quality program can have on an entire school system. |

Michael,
Thanks for responding to my post. I would really like to go to Naperville and see their program. I don't think any school wants to duplicate the Naperville program, but I know we would like to take some of their better ideas so that we can help ours. I hope it works out for you and that your district stays energized! Good luck! |
