I am currently a Physical education major, and math minor at the University of Limerick, Ireland, on an exchange program here in Slippery Rock University, PA. I have noticed that most of the students, in fact all of the students I have talked to, are learning how to teach only Physical Education. In Ireland however, PE student teachers are required to learn how to teach a secondary subject along with PE (mine is mathematics). I have found that both of these subjects tend to compliment each other in terms of dealing with classroom management issues and also in helping me become a cross curricular teacher. My question is; Should PE teachers teach another subject along with PE in schools?

Yes Gary I believe they should. I teach Geography as well as PE. I find these two subjects link really well together. The biggest way i find that these subjects link is through outdoor adventure. All the examples in the classroom can be seen while completing outdoor adventure activities. I also find what we learn in relation to discipline in PE really helps me to make my class run smoothly in Geography and vica versa

Thanks for replying to my post Gerard, I would have to say I agree with you. I think it would be interesting to hear an American point of view to this topic too.
