I am looking for perspectives on teaching leisure activities in PE classes. These activites such as bowling, golf, archery, bocce, and so on, do not raise the heart rate and allow for strenous exercise but do teach students valuable activities that will be played for life. Any thoughts on this would be great.

In my opinion I think sports such as bowling, golf, archery and bocce, are sports that are not meant to raise the heart rates of students, and they are not meant to put them through strenous exercises. Which is why they are leisure activities, they are in a completley seperate category from the sports that get your heart rate up such as basketball and soccer, because there is a lot of running around in these sports.
The leisure sports are something that can be played for years and years in a persons life, an 80 year old person is not going to want to play something that is going to get his or her heart rate up that high. A sport like golf would be perfect.

I think that leisure activities should be included in the Phys. Ed. curriculm. These activites provide an opportunity for the non athletic group of students to get involved and feel as if they can contribute to the activty. Also these activites and skills can be used through out an individuals life.

I include archery, bowling, and golf in my curriculum. Yes, they do not raise the heart rate like basketball and soccer, but there is more to health-related fitness than cardio. It is amazing at how many of my elementary kids can do push-ups after just completing the archery unit. This builds up arm strength through a fun activity that most all students enjoy.

Activities like this mixed with some physically challenging activities make a great combo for the year. The leisure activities are activities they can carry on throughout life and the challenging activities help keep them in shape.

I watched a member of our staff teach a unit that included croquet, bowling, horseshoes, Bocci ball and shuffle board and it was very popular with our students. Because we integrated some form of fitness with each lesson, kids still received aerobic exercise or muscular strength or flexibility, etc., each day. Students indicated that they were doing these activities on weekends and that they were able to get their parents involved. There are prominent social/emotional components to these modest level activities. There is value in all physical activity, so we saw this unit as being integral to our overall curriculum and I would advise any school/department to make leisure activities a part of what they do.

Those activities work well for me in Fla.
We start early Aug. and it is very hot so
less active things are better. The same is true
in May near the end. My kids LOVE archery and
my less athletic kids have a chance to shine.
I do real basic bowling with my little kids and
some enjoy it. I do horse shoes when I have time
(little time now).

I think leisure activities are great. Students health is important not just while they are in school. I think we need to make sure we give them some of the right types of games to play so they can stay active through out their lifetime.

Students need to understand that they will not be 18 the rest of their lives and need to know other options of activity for later years. Activities such as bowling, horseshoes, archery, leisure volleyball and the such are good for students to be exposed to in the classroom setting. This way they learn the correct way to play and can enjoy these activities not only now but later through live as their age increases.
