My daughter is in 6th grade. We are a small Catholic school using every inch of space we have. The PE teacher is female and her large office doubles as the 6th grade girls changing area with cubbies. PE teachers desk and computer are in this room. Problem is she remains in the room when the girls are changing. My daughter does not like this and feels very strange changing in front of the teacher. I feel it is inappropriate. The issue was just addressed with the principal on Friday so I anxiously await the outcome. Can someone comment on this matter? What is normal practice? I don't ever remember a teacher being present when I was in school during PE changing--not ever. Thank you in advance. |

At the elementary and middle school level, I was required to be in direct supervision of the girls in the locker room to prevent any problems that might potentially occur. I used to read the newspaper, work on posters, or anything else to not look directly at the kids while they were changing. Some kids would talk to me when they were done changing and we'd have conversations. At the high school level, we had to be in the proximity of the locker room to prevent any harassment of other students or sneaking a smoke in the lav or outside the back door... that would include walking thru the locker room. I would suggest that you have a conversation with the physical education teacher and let her know your daughter is uncomfortable changing in her presence. Perhaps something can be worked out with her. |
