At the middle school level the kids are coming from different classes and might not know each other very well. Also me as a PE teacher. I wanted to get some recomandations on fun games to interact me with the kids so we are on a good level and they are not intimidated in any way. I also want them to feel confortable in the PE enviornment. Alot of times a few number of kids just dread PE class. I want everyone to know right from the begining that this is going to be a fun and eventfull class. |

One ice breaker game you could do is called warp speed. It is an ice breaker/strategy game. The only equipment you would need is a tennis ball. Have the class in a circle. One person starts with the ball and says their first name and something about themselves that no one else knows about. Then they toss it to another person and that person does the same thing. Tell them to keep in mind who they threw the ball to. The next time around have them say the persons name before tossing the ball to them. Then add a time element to it. Have them figure out how to get the ball touch every person in the same order in the least amount of time. This allows them to use some communication skills and they learn names as well. |

Another Ice breaker that you can play is called the human knot. It will get kids cooperating in close proximity to others. All you do is have a group of students get in a circle formation. They then have to grab the hand of two different people who are not right next to them. This will make quite a mess of appendages. Now all the students have to do it get untangled. This sounds like a simple task, but it may keep some groups busy for 20 minutes or so. You could also turn this game into a competition. This forces more and more group cooperation. Give it a try! |

A great way for your students to get to know each other and yourself would be to have them involved in a personal bulletin board. Have the students bring in a picture of either themselves or of something that they are proud of and display on a bulletin board. This is a great ice breaker for the students. You should participate in this activity as well. Once students are familiar with their peers, then I would suggest ice breaker games. |
