Is showering after gym class still an issue? Are students required or is it optional? I can see both sides to the situation - students are very self conscious during this time in their life and taking a shower in front of other people may cause some problems, but at the same time if the student is sweaty and stinky they should take a shower for their own benefit and for the sake of people that are around them. |

I feel that it should be ones choice to shower in Phy. Ed. class. I do not feel that a child should have to shower with 10-15 other students. |

In the elementary school where I taught, I gave the 5th grade girls the choice of showering on days where they got hot and sweaty. It worked out pretty well after the first time of taking way too long. It was pretty funny. They put on bathing suits...changed in front of everyone...went into the shower area to shower (there was one private shower)...went back to the locker area and changed out of their bathing suit infront of everyone. We didn't shower often... |

Shower's for us at the middle school level, used to be mandatory, every kid, every day and it was very rare that kids tried to get out of it. Then the district (Fresno) lost the towel service, presumably because the coaches were pilfering to many towels and using them for athletic teams, and apparently there were lots of very clean cars on campus! Now it is optional and very few kids shower and some schools have even taken to using their shower area for storage. That's a bad idea since it takes a kids option away. Even in the late 90's we had a few shower, although it was not uncommon for the 7th graders to go in the shower with their underwear AND their shoes on. Yes we tried to catch them, but there were so very many of them. Point is that kids should always have the option and we should teach the value of showering as part of health instruction.

In my High School showering was an option but nobody ever used it. The Showers were very old and some looked rusty, plus we weren't ever given time to logically shower after our class because we had 5 minutes between classes and many of my peers had to go to the other end of the school for class leaving around 1 free minute. If a student actually had the time to shower the smell usually got to them. Since the showers weren't used often the drains would produce a smell resembling Sauerkraut which was really had for most of us to stomach. I know I along with many of my friends who were involved in athletics would have used the showers if not for P.E. then for after practices so we wouldn't have been so sweaty until we could get a shower at our houses. |

Don't worry about whether you will be required to shower after gym class or not, I did after every gym class of mine from grades 7-12, and all of the girls in my gym classes that I instruct do as well, and it's not a problem!
From my own days of mandatory showers in gym class... I got used to it after the first couple of days in the seventh grade, and never gave it another thought after that!
I'm a gym instructor at one of the last all-girls high schools in my county, and I give the girls the option of whether or not they want to shower after gym (mandatory showers barely exist anymore) and with no exceptions they all choose to.
It's clear that my girls would rather be clean and smell nice than to be sweaty and a mess the rest of the day. Trust me, after a few days nudity will not even be something that you will worry about! |

Hi! I'm soon to be a junior in college, and I remember when I was in high school, we were never required to take a shower after gym class, but I do remember some of the girls doing it anyway! A lot of times it was not a problem.
Of course our showers were individual, and after swimming class everyone would get a shower because you didnt want to smell like chlorine, but even if we were sweaty the girls would get a shower and dress behind the walls.
Hopefully your girls are mature enough to realize that showering is a necessity sometimes, and a little nudity isn't going to kill anyone! The instructors always gave us the option to shower, and I know the guys did it. You really shouldn't have a problem! Hope this helped! |

In my middle school, showering after class wasn't mandatory, but it was definitely encouraged. Our teacher would offer bonus points for people who showered. I think that in middle school, a reward like this is very beneficial. I remember that it was not all that uncommon for people in my class to shower afterwards. I think that some motivation like this goes a long ways. Especially during this phase of life when students are just starting to hit puberty and they are a little unsure of themselves. |
