My middle school is considering various scheduling including the "block" schedule. This would mean longer class periods with the possibility of classes 3 times per week...etc.

What are some of the ramifications that this scheduling would have on the PE program? Are there benefits/disadvantages to such a schedule? Is one schedule preferred over another? Any insight?

We had the blocked schedule for my school for awhile in p.e. but now we are on a more traditional schedule of 43 minutes. I found with an hour and a half, that with the attention span of middle schooler's, I had to basically teach two different lessons. I didn't stay on basketball for the entire period. It is nice if you are going to incorporate a fitness plan for half the class and a skill for the other half. Also, I would rather have kids for a whole semester of 43 minutes each day than 9 weeks of the block just because I think kids need daily p.e.

At my high school we used block scheduling, and i hated it for all four years. I honestly can say that I saw no advantages of it.
I beleive that students should have PE every day for a shorter period then for only half a year for a longer time. In our PE classes I know there are people who hated being there for 80 minutes, and if they get tired of being there, they are going to get off the task, especially if it's a really hot day, there were problems with that as summer drew nearer when i was in school, as I am sure there are in most schools.
I also beleive that students, especially at the middle school level should have PE every day, I personally think that they need a class where they can get up and run around, instead of having to sit in a classroom all day.
I definetly, do not beleive that block scheduling is the way to go.

I had block scheduling in high school, and experienced pe in this schedule. The first problem was the students only had the class for half of the year. The second problem is it was very hard to sit there for 80+ minutes. Toward the end of my time in high school the school began to use the block for both pe and health. Half the period the students would go to health while the other stayed for pe, and then they would switch. I felt this was a more effective way of dealing with the issue of block scheduling. I am a STRONG believer in pe year round so i would be against block scheduling with pe because it limits students opporunity for physical activity.

I had many forms of scheduling in high school, one being block scheduling. The only advantage I saw to the block scheduling was it prepared me to sit through long classes when I got to college. Other than this there were no perks. The scheduling I liked the most was modified block. During one quarter we would have some classes that were on a regular schedule of 45 minutes and other classes that needed more time such as Physical Education would get a longer block of time. I think this scheduling worked well. The drawback to this was only having PE for half of a year.

I know in my high school we had block scheduling which is four classes per day lasting 80 minutes. I think it is a good idea if you have PE for all grade levels. Sadly my school chose to only have PE for 10th and 11th grade, therefore not all of us got the PE needed. I think it is a good amount of time to teach more in depth, but if it takes out two years of high school without PE I think it is dumb. But there are many different schools that do different things.
