Title IX was established in 1972 and is a law that states that all persons are to receive equal opportunity to participate in federally funded activities. The underlining message, states that all men and women are to receive equal opportunities. Do you think Title IX has helped or hindered individuals' ability to participate and receive equal opportunities?

I played in HS when there was little beyond cheerleader for girls. Colleges in the south had few women's sports. Yes, I think it made a huge difference in giving women access to higher ed. with sports. DO I think it should be completely equal? If a sport like FB pays the way for many others it should not be used as a benchmark for other sports. If a college has 9 varsity teams for men it should have 9 for women but sports that pay their way should not be included, this would actually include Tennessee women's basketball and I am sure others. Does that make sense. I guess Im saying if the STATE is paying for it they should be equal/

This is a wonderful idea creating sports and opportunities in womens lives is a great achievement but there should not be more women's sports than mens. If it's going to be equal than keep it equal but men's wrestling was taking out at slippery rock so another women's sport could be made and now there is no wrestling at slippery rock. Women have more sports here than mens. There needs to be a law, when the sports opportunities are equal, keep it that way and that includes scholarship and grant opportunities as well. other than what happened at slippery rock i am very pleased ith the Title IX law

I am a woman participating in a collegiate sport and I am very thankful for Title IX. On the other hand I see how many sports were taken away from our university, a majority of them being mens sports. I don't believe this is fair. Although I want women to have an equal right and opportunity to play sports at the collegiate level, I don't feel that the male counterparts of the sports should have to suffer.

Alee, I agree with your comment. When doing research I found out that a lot of mens sports were eliminated and I agree that is not fair. I hope that some day there will be another discussion on making the same amount of collegiate sports for both men and women.
