Is rope climbing in PE class considered too dangerous? could it pose a high safety risk?

I would say yes it is to dangerous. I would go with wall climbing not high but side to side if you wanna do some climbing.

I don't think that rope climbing is to dangerous in a PE class if the proper precautions are taken. In my elementry and high school we had rope climbing and no one to my knowledge ever was injured from it but our PE teachers always made sure that the proper precautions were taken to keep us safe.

Many things we do in our PE classes are dangerous if we do not take the proper safety precautions. I have heard some colleagues suggest that there is no reason that students who are rope climbing should not be wearing a safety harness similar to rock climbers. The simplicity in setting up such a system should not make it prohibitive. I also happen to believe that a carefully planned progression of activities, with strict behavior expectations, and a management history of student compliance would allow rope climbing activities to be safe. All this said, I have created a progression of rope climbing activities that I would be willing to share with anyone who would like to request a copy via e-mail at roskampm@gvsu.edu.
