Hi. I was wondering if you were to do a lesson on skiing or snowboarding, how would you teach it? Could I take the students to a local ski resort or would that be too dangerous or wonder if there wasn't a local resort? Would I simply show a video? Please give me some ideas. Thanks.

We purchased snowboards at our HS last year through a PEP grant. This is our second year and it is going very well. We first received training at a local ski center. Our students are bussed to a small ski hill (complete with the old fashioned rope tow). At the ski hill there is always a ski patrol and a lift person on hand. Before we go to the hill we take a full 85 minute class to complete "dry-land" instruction, which includes skating, ground manouvers & equipment care. Once at this hill, we teach toe/heel slides, weight dirtribution, sliding, stopping and for the more advanced students, heel to toe turns. We have more information on our website, www.brockportpe.org = click on the High School link!

What a fabulous opportunity for your students and a great way to educate your students on using community resources!
Can you share a few more details about your program? Brockport sounds very progressive in it's thinking!

Thanks so much for the complement. Our schools approach to physical education is very progressive. We offer an elective program in our school, which runs off of an 85minute block schedule (a necessity for the type of activities that we offer our students). Students at Brockport complete 8 different activities each school year in addition to fitness and dance, which all students are mandated to participate in.

We began our "quest" for snowboarding/skiing a few years ago. We have a very progressive program and while trying to involve our students in as many lifetime activities as possible, we also wanted to take full advantage of our community resources. We are fortunate enough to have a local facility (Northampton Park) close and have been tossing the idea around to begin downhill ski instruction for the last few years. We surveyed our students and found that there was a greater interest in Snowboarding. Snowboarding also is much more time effective for a PE class. The last two years, we have offered only snowboarding, however, we have received clearance from Swain Ski Center (who maintains the Northampton ski hill) to also use their ski rentals next year.

It is amazing how popular this activity has become. The kids absolutely love it (most of which have never snowboarded before)! Many of them are planning trips to go snowboarding on their own over February break.

We take our students out into the community quite often. For Mountain biking, we bus our students to the Erie Canal where we then take them on a 6 mile round trip ride to the water falls in Holley, NY. During cross-country skiing, we take advantage of many wooded trails and fields throughout the SUNY Brockport campus. Our Inline skaters use various paths throughout the campus. We bus our kids to Brockport Bowl for bowling. We also teach ice skating, using the ice rink at SUNY Brockport. During our golf unit we bus our students to a local driving range, and finally, our snowboarding at Northampton Park. Again, our 85-minute block schedule allows us time to complete these activities. They would be very difficult in a more traditional schedule.

We are very fortunate, we have an incredibly supportive administration that has allotted $20,000 in field trip money to our HS PE program for our off-campus activities! This money is in addition to our equipment budget.
