A big controversy when I was in highschool involved physical education classes vs. sports. Should sports participants be mandated to take physical education class (when they are physically active for two or more hours a day) or should they be allowed to skip class and have a study hall so they can get their homework done? What is you opinion?

I think that raises a good point. I can see both sides of the story. I personally feel being a previous athlete myself that they sould have to participate. I know this is not sports, but does that mean that the quiz bowl team shouldn't go to history or science classes just because they they compete in academic contests.

PE v. Sports? So, we have athletes who have their games and matches, but the debate team and chess team have their competitions, too. The chess team and debate team cannot be excused from science, history, or math. When these athletes graduate from high school, will the students still play football, baseball, or run track? Many PE departments are moving to lifelong activities, such as hiking, rock climbing, fishing, archery. Do these athletes know about these activities? Most likely, no! They should participate just as much as the other students!

At my high school, it was mandatory that if you had physical education class the same day as a game, you had to participate in class. Just because a student participates in a varsity sport does not exclude them from participating in physical education class. Students that are athletes show an example in class to other students that are not involved in extra curricular activities.
