In my high school phys. ed. class, we did a lot of co-ed. activities. I remember several of the girls in my class standing around and not being active. When the class wasn't co-ed., these same girls did participate. I'm looking for suggestions on motivating them to be more active, and to be less intimidated by the boys. Or, is it better to have a second option to the competitive sports games, that would be more suitable for those (boys and girls) who aren't as willing to participate?

I believe it is important to offer the oppurtunity for a co-ed activity, but because of the different levels of maturity and ability between boys and girls i do not think it should be mandatory. In my high school the only time the boy's and girl's classes were combinded was for the dance section. but other than that they were completely seperated. but there was an option for those who did want to participate in a co-ed, more advanced PE class. it was only available for upper classmen. those that wanted to be in that class signed up, so that way there was never a problem with participation or comfort levels, because they knew what they were getting into.

In my high school boys and girls were combined and both participated in the class. It should be mandatory to have both participate because then it would go against title 9 and would cause more problems. In addition, to get the girls motivated us future teachers or teachers should give a lecture on the affects of being physically active and how it can improve ones life oppossed to how it can be bad for ones lifestlye if they are not physically active. Therefore, to movtivate girls and boys they should share the knowledge of the benefits of being physically active so that can movtivate them work out.
