Inappropriate dress among high school students is very common. Females wearing inappropriate shirts to males shorts hanging down to their ankles. What do you think about high school P.E. programs selling athletic shorts & t-shirts with their high school logo to the students for a small one time fee of $10. This money goes directly to the P.E. program for equipment. |

I am currently a student at Slippery Rock University majoring in PE. When it comes to swimming class in high school it is very difficult to make the students to dress for class. It's not like PE where they would feel like they were missing out on a fun activity. I know from being in the high school setting that it is usually the girls who don't want to mess up their hair or make-up, so what would be the best way to handle this situation? |

I think that athletic shorts and shirts with the school logo on them for PE is a great idea. I know that PE dress codes are almost never followed. When I was a senior in high school, them put a dress code in place that required all students to wear a white t-shirt and at least knee length athletic shorts. Of course not everyone followed this but most people did and it seemed to work out just fine. |

I believe that students should dress in athletic wear for physical education class. It can either be a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants. Most schools only grade on if students dress for class, however I believe that if they don't dress they still need to participate but lose some points for not having proper attire and this will teach them to bring their clothes for class each time. |

I feel that the dress code in highschool will always be a an issue. I think the idea of a small fee for the same clothes for everyone is an excellent solution to the ongoing problem.. great idea! |

I teach at a parochial school. As freshman all students are issued a shirt with the school logo, shorts with the school logo and a lock to use in the locker room. If a student enrolls as an upperclassman they are also issued the uniform. The students do not pay the approximate $25.00 cost of the uniform, but the school absorbs the cost. This way all students are expected to wear the same thing in PE class. Occasionally the students are allowed to wear sweatpants/sweatshirts for outdoor activities, but not for indoor activities. |

I don't necessarily agree with having students pay for clothes that, a. they may not be able to afford in the first place, or b. they are not going to like. High school students are very particular about what they wear. I know if i wear something for PE class that is not comfortable, I'm not going to enjoy that class much. However, with that being said, having a required "uniform" for all students would take away from any stereotyping or finger pointing between students. |

Right now I am doing field at a high school that is all girl PE. I never really thought about having uniforms until I was around these girls. Most of these girls wear shorts that barely cover them and I feel is inappropriate. When I was in high school we had uniforms that were a t-shirt and a pair of basketball type, longer, shorts. At the time I thought it was dumb and we did have to pay for them. We actually also had the option of getting sweatpants and sweatshirts too. I feel uniforms would be appropriate if 1. they are provided or 2. are not expensive. I think it would be even more necessary if the gym was co-ed. My views have changed coming from a teacher's standpoint and seeing how the students are dressing for PE these days. |
