I wrestled from 1st grade all the way through college. I was woundering why wrestling is not a part of the physical education curriculum anymore. I noticed when I wrestled not to many students were aware of the sport. In gym we worked mostly on territory sports such as basketball and football.

I taught a unit in elementary school called "Toughness" I had observed another physical educator in another school district teaching this unit. I started with thumb wrestling, arm wrestling and leg wrestling. Did the balance/off balance activity where the outside of the inside foot touch, the inside hands are joined and they try to get the opponent to move their foot. We did a medicine ball pull (one hand on the far side and the other on the near side) Hands could not leave the ball. The student who moves the ball past the restraining line was declared the winner.
Did the same with a towel pull. another activity was one student laying on their stomach and the task was to turn over onto their back. the opponet's task was to keep them on their stomach. We also did from laying on their back. We moved on to having one student on their stomach whose task it was to stand up. The opponent's task was to not let that student stand up...no pulling on clothing or hair. The last task we did was from the wrestling down position...one student on their hands and knees, the opponent with one hand on the elbow and the other wrapped around onto the stomach. Their hips had to be in the same line. The task was to stand up if you were in the down position and the up person's task was to put the down person on their stomach. All the tasks were started with the words "Ready...wrestle!" Grades 1-3 were mixed, grades 4-5 were single sex classes. I don't know much about wrestling and the unit was called a Toughness Unit. The kids LOVED it. Students were instructed that only positve cheering, encouragement was permitted and both members who were performing the tasks had to have cheerers. I had mats on the gym floor on 1/2 a gym (elementary size) and I let the kids chose their partner and there were 4 to a mat. 2 did the activity and 2 cheered. We switched 3 times so everyone had a chance to participate. This is all that I can recall at the moment. I'll look in my archives to see what I left out. I have to find my archives...ha ha!

What a great UNIT find those archives.
I did a wrestling unit once for 5th/6th and they]
LOVED it. I had poor mats so it was not good.
Now I have some mats and would love to do your
unit.
