How you feel about the grading system in PE? Should it be weighted into the student's GPA? Should a large portion of the grade be reliant on participation? improvement? knowledge of skill? How do we account for natural athletes vs. non-athletes?

I would assume the purpose of grading in math and english is to assess the students ability to proceed to further study in the subject. A math grade is a necessary evil in order to select who is going to be able to study college level physics, chemistry or engineering.

I think that there should definitely be grading in PE. Even though you are not giving test like other classes. My high school class was graded on participation, dress, and overall attitude of the student. If you missed class you would have to come in and make it up by walking the gym or paying basketball.

I think grading should definitely waited into the students' GPA. PE is class just like all of the other subjects. I think it should probably be graded more on participation more than anything else. And I'm talking actually participating and not getting the points for the day for just being dressed. PE is to teach students the basics of each sport/activity and the importance of staying active so they can continue to exercise throughout their lives.

I agree that PE class should be weighted. I break down my grading as followed-
40% participation, 10% dressing out, 20% exams, 20% sport/activity/health research paper, 10% food diary

Next year I'll change things where we have a message board, and students will have to contribute so many posts per week as a contribution to the topic. I'll also have them look up studies related to nutrition/health/physical activities and summarize them.

This is a very good issue to talk about. I believe grades should be based a lot on participation. I'm a firm believer in objective grading rather than subjective grading. If the student is prepared, participates, and follows the objectives of the class the student earns the grade. Plus there are standards in phys ed which are objectives, so if the student can complete them they earn the grade.

I believe that grades should be based on mastery of learning targets just like any other class. If the learning targets are developmentally sound then 80% of the students should not have a problem with them and intervention will need to be done with the rest of the students such as additional time, modifications, etc. The learning targets should be based on the state or national standards for physical education, whatever your district has adopted. Physical education is about education and development of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that lead to a lifelong physically active lifestyle. Just because a student is participating doesn't mean they have learned anything. It just means they engaged in physical activity. Is that your only real learning target for the whole year? Other teachers would not get away with that, why do you think we should?

Grading for physical education is a must. Students need to be held accountable for what they are learning. We also have to be accountable for what we are teaching. Our physical education standards in Pennsylvania do not ask me to teach my students to perform any one specific skill they ask the student to evaluate the benefits of activity or assess and use strategies that would enhance interaction in physical activity. Therefore athletic ability doesn’t really come into to play. Students need to come to class prepared to participate in activity in order to evaluate or assess the activity’s benefits. If they are going to understand a strategy using it makes it easier. Grading should include preparation for class and participation in class as it should in any subject. Assessment of what they have learned is also necessary. I teach my students the physical, social and emotional benefits of activity. We actually take part in an activity and then they can experience the benefits. They are learning by doing. I use various assessment methods to grade them on the knowledge they have gained. Our district has a policy that we do have to follow. It is 50% of the grade is on participation in class, 30 % is on preparation for class and 20% is on assessment. Their physical education grades should count towards their GPA. They are earning the grade and adding it to their GPA is a reward and it also holds them accountable. My niece is a top student that just graduated from high school. She was 15th in a class of 500. Her school didn’t use their physical education grades in their GPA. Well she didn’t care about that grade because of it. She had to take a final in physical education, she spent her time on her other finals because the PE grade didn’t count. A grade is what is earned from working in a class just as money is earned for working at a job. How many of us would work for nothing. I say give a grade for physical education and make it count.
