I am currently a studnet at Slippery Rock University majoring in PE. As a PE teacher, do you have the choice to pick your own curriculum or does the school give you one and you can change some things as long as you stay within the guidelines?

I pick the curriculum as far as when, how, and what I teach. However, we have set guidelines according to Oklahoma that I should be teaching.

I think every school is a little different depending on the administration and structure of the PE department. At my school, we have a 3 year rotation of fitness related and sport related activities and units so we are not repeating everything every year. The students have PE every year from 7-12 and would lose interest if we did the same units every year. Every 5 years, the curriculum is revised but we do it as a department. So, yes we get to choose the activities as a department but they also are aligned with the Pennsylvania State Standards and focus on a combination of activities ranging from archery to dance to strength training to self defense, as well as your typical basketball unit.
