Should students be given a choice of activities to participate in during class? When I was in high school, every once in awhile our teachers would have a day where we could choose to walk on the track or play a game like softball. Most of the girls would walk the track because it was easy and required little effort. Is it a good idea for teachers to do this?

I believe this is a good idea because it emphasises on variety. Variety is good in phys ed because it allows students to engage more to their interest. It also gives the students to learn about different physical activities and sports they could benefit later in life

I think that this (in general) is a good idea. I feel that providing options (on occasion, not always)allows the students to choose what activity they would enjoy more, which is part of what PE should be about, enjoyment, not torture! However if walking on the track is being chosen because it takes little/no effort heart rate monitors or some other device should be used to be sure that people are receiving maximum benefit from their workout, no matter which activity they choose to participate in.

Today in some schools the curriculum allows students to take physical education during the summer months. The summer PE course is offered on a first come first serve basis. The class is held every week day for three weeks. The enrollment fee is $50 per student. Do you think it is feasible for high school students to take physical education as a summer school class in order to free up a elective?

I usually give students an option to choose an activity from that weeks unit on Friday. Occasionally I will allow them to chose an activity from any of the previous units.

We just started to offer our sophomores, juniors, and seniors the ability to take P.E. electives instead of a traditional P.E. class. They must take 2 quarters of this before they graduate, but they are allowed to choose whichever elective fits their schedule and interest. We offer a variety and they are 1/4 year classes that meet everyday. I believe P.E. should be manditory, but I believe that it will be much more successful and impactful if the students have a say in the type of activity they engage in.
