I was wondering if it is a good idea to use the fitness gram at the secondary level compared to the president. If the fitness gram is good to use to do think that students would enjoy it more?

Fitnessgram is a great way to administer fitness testing. As any fitness testing all the students results should be kept confidential. FITNESSGRAM could be more enjoyable because there are reports that evaluates the students personal level of fitness against the healthy standard. These reports can then be sent home to parents so the parents are aware of how healthy their child is and it gives them the opportunity to take action if their child is not in the healthy standard. This makes it fun for the students because they can be tested at the beginning of the school year and track their progress on a weekly or monthly basis the whole way til the end of the year. This also gives you as the teacher the chance to evaluate the class as a group and to see where they stand as a whole fitness wise. This is why I believe FITNESSGRAM would be more fun and beneficial for the students, parents, and yourself.

I think the FITNESSGRAM is more appropriate when compared to the president’s challenge. The down falls that I have with the presidents challenge is the fact that it's ranked on three nationally overall levels, where as the FITNESSGRAM is private and individual. The technology used now for physical fitness is great and being able to type data in a software and see where your students stand on a physical level is great. FITNESSGRAM if administered correctly and often can benefit every individual, their families, and school districts. Having certain data on where students may stand on a physical level can help a teacher incorporate lesson to help their students to work on a specific Health Related Fitness category.

I grew up with the President's Challenge. I loved it. It was real simple and not that complex. That being said, as a student who has been out to observe and interact with local schools, as well as done his own fitnessgram, I do enjoy it. I think that the fitnessgram touches on more aspects than the president's test does.

This year was our first year making the change from the Presidential Physical Fitness Testing to the Fitnessgram Test. I believe that the Presidential Tests measure more of how 'athletic' a student is instead of how 'fit' a student is. The shuttle run measures speed and agility and the average student doesn't always see a lot of success in that test. Speed and agility are not my primary goals for a healthy 'fitness level'. In my experience with the Presidential Test, the students are so overwhelmed by the thought of running a MILE and worried about the standard they need to reach for the it that they hate it and creates negative thoughts about Phys. Ed. Whereas the PACER doesn't leave the slowest runners left for everyone to see finish up last, but instead, it eliminates a lot of the embarrassment and encourages the students more the longer they can last.
