Today I am seeing Phys. Ed teachers lean more toward a fitness base class. They are doing this to help students become more healthy. Should the traditional style of sport based Phys. Ed. class be abandoned and should I jump on the fitness based band wagon? I believe that a good Phys Ed. class has a mix of fitness based and sport specific activities not just an excess amount of either. Does anyone out there agree?

Current best practices would be a fitness based curriculum. This curriculum would emphasize life skills, knowledge, and, hopefully, a positive attitude towards a physically active lifestyle. A traditional sports model would emphasize sport-specific skills that less that 5% of the students would utilize in life. I vote for the fitness based model while still working on fundamental skills in a variety of actiities and environments.
