A member on my department is interested in starting a PE class designed for athletes that works on conditioning, strenght training, and agility training. He is the boys basketball coach and thinks that our PE classes are not beneficial for the athletes. I have my opion but would like to hear what others think. Please share your thoughts both pro and con for a class of this nature.

Physical education classes are-should be- much different than athletic programs. Classes offer a variety of courses that empower students to select physical activities that will lead them to lifelong particiaption. Through active participation we strive to develop physically educated individuals who have the skills, knowledge, appreciation and confidence to participate and enjoy a wide variety of activities throughout a lifetime. These programs are critical to the development and maintenance of good health.

Athletic programs are also a critical component of high school programs. However, they do not present a comprehensive program designed to promote future leisure pursuits and a healthy lifestyle.

I understand the intention of your coach. We all want our atheletes to be able to compete at their maximal potential. He should dedicate himself to meeting his goal by personnaly training his athletes in his off season or by assigning that duty to someone else,... but not to the p.e. department.

As physical educators we have state mandated issues to be concerned about and cannot donate the entire class period to training students specifically for their sports. Hopefully we provide sound practices in our classes which enable the student athletes to train effectively on their own time. As an educator who spends his day in the weight room, I like to think that that students in my classes are meeting the state mandates while at the same time are continually improving on their technique and strength gains. I contend that the physical educator's role is to teach not just to train and coach.

In my opinion your basketball coach does not understand the purpose of physical education.

Barb it sounds like this other teacher should be talking to the AD to hire a strenth & conditioning coach. Physical Education courses involve a lot more than just making better athletes. In fact we specialize in the non-athlete and getting them to move and teaching everyone why.

Thought I would offer the coaches perspective. I coach at a small rural school. Weight training and condiditioning in the off season is essential to help the kids be competitive in their sports. But, we compete for the kids' time. An athlete's PE class allows us to give the kids the time they need in the weight room. It reduces the pressure on the size of the room and the amount of equipment. Our school does not have the budget for an additional staff member. Why would the PE class not be beneficial to everyone?

In my high school there were choices you could make once in 10th grade about the PE course you went into. We had a class that was designed just for athletes. The class was mostly lifting and running. As an athlete in the school I enjoyed the class. My problem with it was what about the other athletes. The main example I have was a local hockey team that was not with the school, but a lot of the players went to my school. These students could not take the class because the sport was not recognized by the schoool. I think if your going to create this program you should make sections for athletes and sections for regular students. This would give everyone a chance to take and enjoy the benefits.
