How can students in Physical Education give back to their community.

Until September 11, 2001, athletes have been more known for self involvement than for giving, but with the refusal of the NY Jets to play after the events of the 11th, their message, that the real heroes of our nation are not athletes, social perspective has returned. In that vain, what may we do as physical educators to promote the giving, signs of respect and community awareness that has increased since the WTC tragedy and how can we do it while staying in curriculum?

Much like college athletes are required to do service as part of their team responsibilites, I agree that our high school athletes should be asked to view their community position as more than competition. However, I do not theink most high school coaches can take on this addition responsibility. Maybe this can be given to the Booster Clubs! As a teacher and a Mom I know I can handle more than concession stands. WHt do you think?

We ran events ... Dance Concerts, School Dances, Volleyball Round Robins, Sportsnight etc. to raise money. Then all or part of the monies collected from ticket sales and entry fees were dedicated either to a student scholarship for a summer camp program or a public charity. My dance club also performed in nursing homes and hospitals and churches.
