Most elementary schools do not teach their kids anything about nutrition, or how eating healthy can help them. Students usually don't learn this information until middle school. Do you think students in the elementary school should be taught this information, or do you think it is appropriate to wait until the middle school level?

I am a K-5 PE Teacher and I team teach Nutrition Ed with the School Nurse. All students get nutrition instruction once a month using various resources. We have been doing this for 4 years now and the benefits show in terms of knowledge retention from year to year.

I really wish more schools taught nutrition just like any other subject maybe as a special class like PE, Art, Music and Library. To me this is just as important as anything else.

I also feel this should be an important part of the curriculum. I spend about 2 1/2 weeks on nutrition in 6th grade but with the limited amount of time I have with the students (9 wks)and the other curriculum standards, it just isn't enough time! I like the idea of nutrition instruction once a month using various resources! Students should get some knowledge of nutrition in the elementary level so that they have the basic information when they get to middle school and we can go more in depth with topics.

Our elementary schools also do not teacher nutrition in class format. The nurse, guidance counselor, PE and classroom teacher touch on it. I think they react to what they see more than plan an organized unit on it. Our district Wellness Committee has, however, been very active in the last couple of years obtaining grants to nutrition education. We have re-decorated our cafeterias with appropriate signage identifying nutritional values of food and our food service coordinator has been aggreeable in offereing "taste tests" once a month in all three elementary schools with new, healthier choices of food. It 's been a big success.

I agree that nutrition should be taught in elementary school. At our middle school we only have health in 8th grade and by that time their nutritional habits have already been reinforced. If they could grasp an understanding of good nutrition at an earlier age it would greatly benefit them when they start to get more choices at the middle school level for lunch. I don't think you can start too early when it comes to nutrition.

Our school has worked with cafeteria personel as well to create "taste test" once a quarter for the last 5 years. It is a great was to introduce the students to foods they otherwise would not try. They then have the food item for lunch within the next couple of weeks. Students fill out evaluations forms if they liked it or not and can post comments.
