HHS Secretary Sebelius Announces Cornerstone Funding of the $650 Million Recovery Act Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative

Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Tom Frieden announced in September the availability of $373 million in competitive grant funds for local communities to adopt and implement evidence-based policies and programs to improve nutrition, increase physical activity, decrease overweight and obesity and decrease tobacco use. These funds are the first of the $650 million for prevention and wellness from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that have been made available. Through this newly-created program entitled "Communities Putting Prevention to Work" that will operate through the CDC, communities and tribes are able to apply for funds to address healthy eating and active living and/or tobacco use among people of all ages and across all community sectors. The CDC plans to award 30-40 two-year grants, focusing on communities at highest risk and where the policies and programs will likely have the greatest impact. Applications are due December 1.

In the coming weeks, the Department of Health and Human Services will announce the availability of an additional $200 million in prevention and wellness recovery act funds, at least a portion of which is expected to be used for state, territory and national-level initiatives.
