Do professional athletes have an obligation to give back to the community? Consider the following questions and weigh in with your unique perspective and ideas on the discussion board! Visit http://are-athletes-obligated.org/category/are-not-obligated/ to see what other people are saying including Tony Hawk, Mia Hamm and Annika Sorenstam. Are athletes more obligated than anyone else? If you were the beneficiary of someone else’s help in your development should you be more obligated? Are pro athletes more obligated than amateurs or college athletes? Are athletes who make more money more obligated than others? Is this a private matter and none of anyone’s business? What motivates you to give back? Is obligation the right term? Is it more acceptable if it refers to moral versus professional obligation? |

I feel that if you are a professional athlete then you should feel obligated to give back to the community. The community is the reason you receive the type of paycheck that you get. Having said that, you are also a role model to people in the community, so that puts you in a position to make a positive impact and since the community is the reason you have a wealthy paycheck, then yes you should feel obligated to give back in a positive way. Although I realize that some professional athletes are not capable of being a positive role because of the poor decisions that they make, they should realize that they are being looked up to and need to make better decisions. |

In a perfect world athletes would go back to their communities and give back with time and money. I know of some that do. I dont think many of them understand how much of an impact they could make. I wish the prof. leagues would give their employees info. on how to do these things and encourage it. |
