In one of my college level courses we are starting to work with pedometers. I have heard of them, seen people wearing them but I have never used one myself. This being because in my high school PE classes we were stuck in the same routine each year, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Tennis/Softball. Pedometers count step count so what I want to know is how would you incorporate pedometers into your classes if you had to stick with that same curriculum that I had in my high school because of limited equipment?

I am student teaching right now and the way we incorportated pedometers into our curriculum was by doing a "Walk Across Arkansas". We made a bulliten board with a huge AR map on it and put up different pins for each class period. We then had the students put on pedometers in class and write down the amount of steps they took. We would take the class average and that is how far we would move the pin (for every one mile they walked it was 5 miles on the map). We also incorporated other subjects such as history of cities that we were walking to and math.

Pedometers are great in PE classes. They really give students a visual idea of just how much activity they do just in the everyday life. From my past experience with pedometers my class just has to keep a log book of everything we did that day and how many steps we walk. In the end we had a complete jornal of all of the physical activity we had done. The "Walk Across Arkansas" idea is great though! that would really get the interested in seeing how far the really walk.

Pedometers are a great tool for students to track their fitness levels. I use them in simple situations such a the wieght room. Not only do the students need to have a certain workout, but they also need to have a certain number of steps. I also use the pedometers outside during flag football. A lot of times students want to the QB for the whole class. If they do that they will never get the right amount of steps in the class. The pedometer puts responsibility on the student for assessment of themselves instead of always on the teacher.

Pedometers are only valuable if certain precautious are taken before use. They must be shake proof. Students have found out that they can shake them and their step count will increase dramatically. Also, it is important to make sure that you have the stride length set appropriately to the individual user. Finally, the pedometers should be durable and come with a clip on and rope. This way it prevents the pedometer from coming off the user. If these precautions are taken then pedometers are an objective assessment that can be used in a physical activity setting.

You can use pedometers to help you estimate not only the distance covered in a workout, but also the intensity of effort. Here's an article that explains how:

I have used pedometers as a walk across project and others. I am currently planning on an outside program as an action research project. I will have a group of 20 students participate in a pre-test using pedometers to create a baseline step total. Next, the students will participate in a variety of physical activities using the pedometers to record total steps over an eight week period. At the end of the eight weeks, the students will participate in a post test to see if their baseline steps increased by participating in physical activities outside of their normal daily total. Using motivational incentives are always a plus as well. Maybe see if a retailer will donate an ipod of gift card so students have goals they can work towards.

I have used a pedometer in one of my Physical Education courses in college. We did a project that involved wearing the pedometer for seven days. Then doing some calculation to see how active we were during that time frame. This project I felt was really eye opening because it allowed everyone to see how active and how many steps they may take in a day or seven days. I would really recommend teachers using pedometers in their various physical education classes, whether it is for projects or for participation points. Pedometers are a very good way for students to see the progress their students are making and how active they can be while not in class. However, are there any games I as a future Physical Education teacher could use in my classes while using the pedometers?

Pedometers are a great way to motivate the students to live a more physically active lifestyle. One idea is to have your students use the pedometers for say a week straight and tally up their steps. At the end of the week the students with the highest tally gets some kind of reward. This in my opinion is a great way to help get our students up and on their feet and being physically active as aposed to sitting at home watchin TV.

I use pedometers with my sudents in grades 2-5 for our Healthy Steps unit. Our AD was able to use our budget money to buy 50 pedometers for our school so I have been trying to incorporate them as much as possible. My students absolutely love to track their steps during PE class and they love to track how many steps they do each day. The only downside to the pedometers we have is that they sometimes reset themselves, so I suggest if you buy them for your program that you get a quality brand so they last and are efficient.

A lot of our students also brought their own pedeometer from home or went to Sports Authority so they could keep track all day long and on weekends. The bottom line is, children today are not getting enough physical activity so we need gadgets like a pedometer to get them motivated to be and stay physically active!
