I am currently going to school to become a Health and PE educator in Pennsylvania, I am worried about budget cuts and job security after graduation in three years, any suggestions on what I should do to make sure i can get a teaching job after I graduate? Should I wait it out and see where this dilemma goes, or should I just completely change my career path? |

Finding teaching jobs in this current economic climate is difficult for even the best candidates. There are areas of the country that are searching for teachers in Health and PE, so if you are willing to move to another state, that may work for you. It helps to be a member of your state AHPERD and become involved. Attend your state conference. You will meet many educators and administrators who may be able to help you in your search. You would also be interacting with individuals who want physical education and health to be quality programs. Attend the Eastern District Association conference and the National Conference if you are able. Check with your Future Professionals association to see if there are grants that help defray the cost of attending. Be aware that your state membership and the AAHPERD membership are two different organizations. EDA is a part of the AAHPERD structure. Good luck with your search. |

I don’t believe that your career path should change. I know job security is absolutely important but so are your dreams. Budget cuts are devastating and the whole process right now is as well but I personally think eventually is has to get better. This is always going to be a need for educators and we just have to stand our ground with importance. The post before mine has vital information how to become more involved which I completely agree with. But as for right now, there is nothing much a single physical educator can do currently beside hold their ground. I also think it is important to be proactive in obtaining information from the government and what is being revealed with this ongoing process. I’m in the same boat! Keep your sails high. |
