I am currently a sophomore at Slippery Rock University majoring in Health and Physical Education. I have often asked myself if I should complete my education, graduating with a B.S. Degree and then start job searching, OR if I should consider getting my Masters immediately after my B.S.? I have thought that if I complete college with my B.S., that I could consider going back for my Masters and take classes (during summers) since I would have off from teaching. ANY SUGGESTIONS??? |

I am a senior and have been deciding to go on to get a masters degree. My incentive for getting a masters degree is because I can do it with a graduate assistantship. If I didn't have a graduate assistantship I don't think I would want to get a masters degree right after graduating because A, it is expensive and B, I have heard many school districts don't want to pay a young teacher more money without the teaching experience. If you go on to get a teaching job though - I have heard that you school district may help you pay for your masters degree. Perhaps career services can help you. |

It really depends on what you want to do. If what you want to do requires a Masters Degree, then do that. If you want to teach PE (K-12), then don't stay and get your Master's Degree just to avoid the job market. You would be wasting money. |

My aunt taught english in the public school district for 30 years and she feels that getting your masters while your teaching is the best way to go. Schools do not want to pay a masters level teacher with little or no experience. |
