Smoking is a dangerous and self-destructive habit. Various poisons contained within tobacco smoke cause or contribute to cancer of the mouth and lungs, heart problems, emphysema, gum disease and a variety of other physical diseases. Cigarette smoking is the most preventable cause of premature death in the United States . That’s important! Want evidence of the dangers of smoking? Consider these statistics: A smoker’s risk of heart attack is more than twice that of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking is the biggest risk factor for sudden cardiac death -- smokers are looking at two to four times the risk of nonsmokers. Studies have shown that cigarette smoking is also an important risk factor for stroke. The evidence also indicates that chronic exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke, passive smoking) may increase the risk of heart disease. Most smokers sincerely want to quit. They know cigarettes threaten their health, set a bad example for their children, annoy their acquaintances and cost an inordinate amount of money. Nobody can force a smoker to quit. It's something each person has to decide for himself., Sometimes the cigarette is used as a tranquilizer.. Once a smoker understands his own smoking behavior, he will be able to cope more successfully and select the best quitting approaches for himself and the type of life-style he leads. Quitting is hard, but don't give up! Quit smoking Now! For better Life,,!!! (Message edited by admin on July 22, 2005) |

Everyone is always talking about the smokers. What about the people who are using chew and/or snuff. What are the solutions for those people to quit chewing and quit smoking. You can only show someone so many pictures and tell them to read so many things. They know the causes and effects, but how do they quit? |

There is not one specific way I don't think for anybody to quit smoking. A person can come up with a miracle way for the majority to quit smoking. I think the person has to want that change in their life. Otherwise if they don't and they have seen the consequences - don't ever stop praying for them though. It is not impossible! My dad managed to both stop smoking and drinking by the grace of God - As did my next door neighbor and (practically a second dad) Bill. I love my dad and my neighbor. As for chewing - maybe if they get sick enough they will stop - or replace the chew with something else .... |

I personally don't have as much of a problem with the general population using tobacco (smoking or chewing) as I do with physical education majors using it. I work part time at a convenience store, adjacent to a health club. You would be shocked at the number of people who come into the store wearing a "_______ Health Center Personal Trainer" polo shirt and buy cigarettes and tobacco. It boggles my mind how someone can be so concerned with external physical fitness, and have absolutely no regard for the internal fitness aspect. The "Personal Trainer" title tricks people into thinking they value health and wellness, when they really only value aesthetics and how they look. If it weren't illegal, I'd say all fitness centers should include tobacco use as a criteria for hiring. |
