Is it necessary to give equal playing time to athletes at the elementary and middle school level regardless of skill?

I believe in the elementary level you should give everyone a chance to play. I don't think you should have to let everyone play the same amount of time. In the middle school years i believe the students are old enough for the best players to be playing as long as the coach wants.

It is necessary to give elementary school kids equal playing time. You want to promote fun for the kids and you want them to play in the future. As you get into middle school you should still give every kid a little bit of playing time but not equally as much as the best players. Of course, when you get into high school, the best players are the ones who should be playing to give your team the best chance to win.

I believe it is to an extent. Say perhaps the Little League World Series would be one exception. For the most part, as a young child equal playing time is key.

I strongly believe that in the elementary school years every child should get equal playing time these years are critical to these children. Once in middle school i think that every child should play but not equal playing time they are older in middle school and realize not all through life does everyone get equal opportunities.

I am very competitive so I feel that this is the grade level when coaches should start to set the tone for athletics and only play the best players. Coaches need to let the players understand that sports are competitive and they should learn that at a younger age.

I feel that you should play to win. At that age I feel that everyone needs a chance to play, because you never know how tall they will be in high school or how good they could be in the future. But as far as equal I don't think that needs to happen.

At a young age children require equal playing time to progress and to reach their potential. Skill level at this age doesn't play a big factor because everyone is learning and the teams you play versus are going through the same thing. If a player never gets to be on the court or the field how are they going to learn to play in a game situation?
Level the playing field and keep the competitive play for the older kids.

I feel you should always play to win but have fun doing so. I guess for the elementary kids you you should give all of them a chance to get adequate playing time. This is when they learn these skills and decide if this is a sport they want to continue in. As they reach middle school the better players should be getting most of the playing time, but don't go as far as to not play the other kids. And if you want to put them in every game don't put them in for the last few seconds of the game that is degrading for them.

Yes, if believe in the elementary level you should give all kids equeal playing time. Not playing certain kids will discourage them, and keep them from wanting to play in the future.

At elementary and middle school age it is important to encourage every athlete. So, I do think it is important to give equal playing time. If an athlete never plays and doesn’t get the experience they need, they will never improve. Sometimes winning is not always the answer, but encouraging athletes to continue in something they like is. Not everyone starts out a great athlete.

Yes it is incredibly important at this level to help benefit every athlete. If you do not you discourage alot of students to quit and lose their potential. My brothers have both played basketball in 7th and 8th grade and I see games where the same 7 kids play the game and the other 15 kids watch them and expect to be a team player, and yet they are still losing by 25. It really is frustrating for parents, siblings, and honestly for the general public. It should be about building skills and having fun with it at that age.

Yes, i think that every student should have the opportunity to play at this level. This is when children are starting to develop their skills, so everyone should get the chance to perform what they have learned and perfect what they have learned. I use to think that the athlete with more talent and skill should play more regardless, but after taking courses in college and learning more about skill development, every student should have an opportunity to practice their skills at this age. Without minutes in a game, a student athlete doesn't have the opportunity to feel that "game situation" atmosphere. So, if an athlete never gets to feel what this is like, then it will be harder for them to compete at a higher level later on. Basically, every young athlete should have the opportunity to be in a game time situation. That is how athletes learn and improve. So, I think at the elementary/middle school level all athletes should play, but when it comes to high school I would say no. High school is more competitive and there is more at stake.
