Hurdle Training

Coaching hurdles is fun and being able to see improvement in an individual is encouraging. I feel like after so many drills and so many training my hurdlers level off and keep running the same time. Is there any newer drills or training techniques that i can have my hurdlers try to help improve their time?

Yes there are definitely drills that can help hurdlers improve their time. I am a collegiate 400m hurdler and my time has improved drastically from high school, just due to the drills we do. In the 300 or 400m hurdles it it critical for the runner to attack the hurdle and maintain speed when going over. The perfect drill for these races is to set up one hurdle in a lane and another approximately 15 meters down the track in that same lane. Have the hurdler start jogging away from the first hurdle at a slow pace. When the coach says go the hurdler should turn around and sprint towards the first hurdle, clearing it with power with which ever leg comes up on the hurdle. then the athlete continues sprinting to the second hurdle and clears it with which ever leg comes up. The next time through move the second hurdle to a different location to ensure that the athlete will need to adjust again. This drill will force the hurdler to attack the hurdle with both dominant and non dominant legs.
