When I ran in high school we did alot of hard workouts, but our coach also had us doing "fun" stuff to break it up and make it enjoyable at the same time. These are some of the different things we used to do and I was wondering if anyone had anything similar they used to do or how they feel about these different styled workouts some times.
First one was get teams of four to six and have them all hold onto a rope. Send them out on a loop and have someone let go at 400m then more people let go at 800m and finally again at 1200m until only one person finishes the mile. Then the whole team has to get to the finish and run together to a set point.
Another is just your standard relay race pick a distance and have three people and run point to point switching off.
A handicap interval where you run the distance once and then reverse the order giving the last finisher a head start.
Have teams of two start out on a loop going opposite ways and meet in the middle (ideally) and slap hands then turn around.

A fun activity that we used to do during track season to practice on our hand offs for relays was we would get into groups of 4-6 girls/boys on separate teams depending on how many alternates we had. We would do an indian run kind of but we had a water balloon that we had to successfully keep as a water balloon. So we would pass the water balloon from the back of the group to the front of the group. When the balloon got to the front of the group the leader would move slightly to the side and the people who were in line with a water balloon had to sprint forward so the leader now became the last person and they were able to pass the balloon forward. We had a competition with this, boys vs. girls. We had a set amount of laps that we had to run and depending on which group was able to not drop or pop their balloon was done with practice after their cool down. But the group of people who ruined their balloon had to continue all the laps required, plus they had to do an extra two laps for being the "losers," and then do their cool down. It was a lot of fun and as far as the girls team was concerned we didn't drop our baton durings relays because we knew we would get in trouble for that too kind of like dropping the balloon.

Also, during cross country when we had easy days. Instead of just running around our course a couple times our coach would let us play games that had us constantly moving. Ultimate frisbee was one of our favorite games to play on easy days because we were able to show our abilities, constantly move, and just bond as a team. I think not only did that help us get better/faster but it also made our team closer which was awesome.
