at what age to begin to have cuts for hockey try-outs?? and also, what happens if there is only one team at the level, and one organization in the area?? We dont want to disencourage the players from the playing the game, but do you have them on the team, just to fill up the roster??

It depends on the number of kids allowed on a roster and the number of kids trying out. You could have one big team if it still meets the roster limit. Too many, then you can split into two teams. I think cutting kids should probably start around the high school age because there is usually only 1 freshman, 1 j.v., and 1 varsity team.

I can remember playing hockey when I was around 10 years old and some players were cut from the team. They were told that if there were enough cuts and more interest that a 2nd team could be started. Obviously making cuts depends on your situation and how many players you are allowed to roster. Currently, I coach a college hockey team and we have 2 mens teams. If a player is cute from the top team, they will be asked to play for the lower team. If a player is cut from the bottom team, they will be asked if they would like to be a part of our "hockey management" team. These members act just like an equipment manager and take care of all off ice duties.
