When I was in high school we were not allowed to be failing more than two classes or we could not play on the varsity team. Do you think that is good or do you think it should be the students should carry a certain GPA in order to play?

NO I do not think that is good. TWO CLASSES!! You should not be able to be failing anything. They are supposed to be "student athletes". "Student" comes first! If you cannot keep your grades up you do not need to be participating in after school activities. If anything a school district might want to set up tutors for athletes that are on the verge of failing so they do not get put in this situation. Or even once they are failing a class, give a certain time period of probation to get their grades up before they are not allowed to participate.

I believe if a studnet is failing he/she does not deserve to be playing a sport. I am in favor of what Farrell H.S. recently did. I believe their new policiy states that for any student athleteto participate in a sport they must carry a 2.0 gpa and they cannot be failing any classes. It cost them many games last season but they are sending the right message.

I agree with you all. If an athlete is not a student, as such they should not be given the title as a student-athlete. Nonetheless, as coaches of these high school students we should do whatever is in our powers to make sure that these athletes are becoming GREAT students before they step onto the playing fields. The punishment of better student-athletes is two-fold, first on the individual athlete who is unable to participate and then his/her teammates who rely on the that athlete.

I Feel that in high school the athlete should be required to carry a certain GPA. It forces the student/athlete to get his or her homework done on time. This also creates a habbit of studying frequently. I am an athlete at SRU and if the athlete wants to compete they will study and they will do their work. Being a student/athlete requires a student to have great time management. If this is passed in high schools, think of how prepared the student will be.

It is true that whenever a student did'nt get the certain GPA, he/she cannot play for his/her school. It is applicable specially in college. Being an athlete does'nt mean that you have to study for you to play it's you have to play for you to study.

as an athlete myself i do understand that keeping grades up while in season in some sports can be very difficult. for an example in baseball during the season you will have games during the week usually being the same days every week. this will result in you missing the same classes week after week causing you to fall behind very quickly. this is why i think it should be based on GPA and not classes passed.

This should be based on a certain GPA. I don't believe any student athlete should be failing any classes. Students who don't care about school, shouldn't be playing on gameday and your a student first, not an athlete.

I truly believe we would do our students a disservice if we let them think that sports was more important than their grades. Most will not be going on to professional sports to make the millions of dollars. Many will use the sport to stay in shape when they are older or even coach. If they don't have the grades needed, how do they get into college to learn a career so it pays the bills later on? We need to show them that their classes are more important and that they should be taking them seriously.

I think one of the best messages out right now is the one by the NCAA that says, over 300,000 collegiate athletes will be going pro, in something other than sports. The students need to know that education is the main priority and the coaches need to enforce that message.

I think that the student should have to carry a certain GPA, have good attendance in each class throughout each 9 week period, and be able to turn in all work on time. They are first students and then athletes. This will teach them the importance of responsiblity at a high school level and prepare them for college. At the school I am teaching at, the athletes are required to have so many hours of study tables in the morning or after school. I think this helps out alot.

I think that athletes should be required to carry over a 2.o QPA, which is a "C" average, to participate in athletic events. Athletes are students first and are looked up to. They should maintain decent grades, attend class regularly, and stay away from trouble. There should be a higher standard put on athletes because they are special.

In my high school it was no pass no play. We had to be passing all our classes just to practice. That upholds a student-athlete standard. I think all student-athletes should have to be passing all classes to play.

High school students that play sports are called student athletes and the word "student" comes first for a reason. I feel that a student shouldn't be failing more than one class in order to play because playing a sport is a privelige a student gets. By setting this standard for high school students, not only disciplines them but also sets them up to be successful in life. If theres nobody pushing them and showing them the importance of hard work, then they won't work hard later in life.

Being a scholarly athlete, I believe that all student of all grades should have a certain gpa to play or practice because it is unfair to those students who bust their butts just to make it by and be able to play. i know some of the best athletes might not have the grades but what does that do for them when they get help by letting them go and play..... You have to set rules and demands for all students to follow to maintain a stable environment. IF you let one player get by then all should be able to. They need to learn early so that when they get out to teh real world there is no get out of jail free!! anyone agree?

In my high school you could not play if you had under a 2.5 GPA and/or failing any classes. I think that it was acceptable to have this requirement because the students are in school to learn, not play sports. Students were well-aware of this rule and still in football season by the time play offs came around 1/5 of our team was on academic probation, not able to participate in any school functions including athletics.

High School athletes should not be allowed to fail courses. I think that they should have to maintain a certain grade in their classes and an overall GPA. They have to learn that academics is just as important as athletics

It was the same in my high school too. If you were failing two classes you were benched from your sport for a certain period of time. I feel as if this rule is a good rule and it should be this way in every school. It is not fair for a student who is not succeeding in the classroom to be allowed to participate in a sport or activity. This will also motivate the student to want to do better in school so they can proceed in playing their sport.

I personally would find out what the school's required graduation GPA is. Then I would probably add half a number (for ex. schools required GPA 2.0-2.5) and require that grade point average combined with no failing grades in more than two courses. If however the students fail to meet the bar set they will be suspended from game-play, and will continue to be so until they meet the required grade point average.

I agree that to play high school sports you should not be failing anything. Otherwise it will send the wrong message to the student athletes saying that they don't need to do anything if they are good at sports. They are at school to learn everything else should come second.
