How do you feel about fathers coaching a team when their own son plays on that team? I feel that most of the time it is a bad situation because the father will favor his son for playing time even if he is not the best player for the position. I have been on many teams where a father has ruined a team because he does not put the best players on the field and just plays the favorites. I also feel that for the son it puts unwanted pressure on him to perform at his best.

Yes fathers may favor their sons in many situations but most of the time it is difficult to find a head coach and fathers are usually the only available coaches.

This topic has come up a few times throughout my adolescent years. My father was my baseball coach for pretty much all my childhood. In this situation though, I honestly feel that my dad being the coach had nothing to do with my playing time or me being a favorite on the team. However, I do feel that when a father coaches his son's team, certain aspects might come in to play where other may feel that he is favoring his son over others. In my opinion, I believe that this occurs because the father knows his own son's potential and talent more than the other players. Obviously, due to the fact that the father spends much more time and possibly practices with his son as compared to the rest of the team. In some situations however, the stereotype of fathers coaching sons is true. I myself went through this experience with a friend and his father, who was the head coach. Not to be the one to judge another person, but the son's skills were not up to par with other teammates who were sitting the bench. Even though the son's skills were not as good as some of the other players, his father (the coach) still started him. It created an uncomfortable environment with some of the players and even factored into 2 of our players quitting the team. Therefore, having fathers be the coach of their sons' teams can create a bad situation but can also play no factor at all. I guess it depends on the mentality of the coach/father and how he wishes to coach his team; either the best way or his way.

Parents being the coaches of their children is never a good idea. One of two things happens. One, the child gets favored and it is not fair to other students. On the other hand I have seen situations where the child of this coach actually gets taught unfairly and too harshly. Also, everyone needs some time away from school/sports/etc. and bringing this into the home could cause problems.
