• As an elementary Physical Education teacher, I want to get students and teachers more involved. So, I have this idea of an elementary Olympics where one day out of the school year, all students will participate in an Olympic-style competition. Students will represent their class and compete with other classes in their grade. Competition will mainly be in track and field due to limited time. Also, track and field emphasizes on different aspects of athletics such as speed, endurance, strength, and power. Awards will be for the top 3 in each event like it would be at the Olympics and in addition, there would also be 3 top team awards. I believe that by doing this event, it will allow students to be active, learn about the Olympics, and connect with classmates and their teachers. I need some opinions about this, so should I try it or would it be a disaster?

I feel this is a great idea. When I was in high school, we had track and field day in which we did the same thing you are thinking about. It was always the highlight of most of the student's year. The physical education teachers would make a sign up sheet for the students to sign up for 3-4 events before, during, or after classes. The event was only half a day but ran very smoothly. The varsity track team at my school helped out with the event; keeping time, setting up and taking down hurdles, giving out awards. It was also a good day for the students to interact among themselves and catch up with each other since they do not get to really talk much during the school day. The teachers also are able to talk amongst themselves and enjoy their day. I say try it out and see how it goes, and the students seem to enjoy the day, make it an annual event.

I have done a field day/olympic activity with my kids over 25 years. My k-1 does some fun events as a group and then my 2-5th do running and field events. I have them in groups of 8-9boys and 8-9 girls and 10-11 boys and 10-11 girls. If I have some 12 year olds I allow them to participate. We have the 80yd dash, 200 run, 400 run and 800 run. I have a relay for those that are having a hard time placing 1st 2nd or 3rd to make sure the win a ribbon. I also do 5 field events:football throw (through a tire) dribble a soccer ball through cones for time, the shot put, jumprope for a minute and basketball shoot from spots for pts (timed).
I also have a bike race for kids that bring a bike and helmet. It takes all day and the teachers run my field events. I give out ribbons for 1st-3rd place in all events. My kids that get a 1st or 2nd go to our county field day (set up the same way). I run 3 seperate ones (my two schools and the county meet)

This a great Idea. I have done olympic field days for the past three years. My students participate in track and field events. The events were 100m, long distance run, relay race, shot put, discuss, long jump and triple jump. These events are taught prior to our field day. For the students in K-2 I use a hula hoop for the discuss and an official size softball for the shot put. For the students in grades 3-6 we use our indoor/outdoor track and field set. I assign parents to run the events where they will time or measure each students success and log it on a chart. At the end of the event the top three place finishers for each class will receive medals(gold, silver, bronze). Every student receives a participation trophy at the end of the event.

I think the idea is wonderful. Anything to promote health and wellness is a great idea. I do, however, think that to have just running and jumping events could be tedious for elementary aged students. Do some creative "little things" to add zest and fun to the day. For example, instead of students handing off a baton in a relay race, have them hand off a stuffed animimal. My two cents! Have fun....

This is a great idea! We did something similar to this when I was in middle school and high school. We took a day to have track and field events. Students and teachers really enjoy this day because it gave everyone a day just to be outside and be active. Also, after the end of the events, each class played tug-of-war against another class. It got everyone involved even the teachers. All and all, I think it is a great idea.
