I do believe dodgeball is a good sport for physical education because it can get a person moving and keep you active. The only thing about this game that is bad is that it's an elimination type game and people are going to lose. So for these people I think they should do jumping jacks or some other locomotor movement but what is your opinion on this subject.....is dodgeball appropriate for physical education?

Dodge Ball is not appropriate at this day in age, it is a big liability and the fact that it is an elimination game is even worse. all the better or higher skilled children will go after the lower skilled children and get them out, another thing children do is join cliques and usually higher skilled kids go with higher skilled kids and they can gang up and get the other children out this is completely unfair so no I do not agree with dodge ball at all unless you are doing it for leisure and on your own time where you get a choice to either play or not to play.

Dodgeball is a game just like basketball, soccer, and every other sport. Someone will win and someone with lose. The ones that win can be the stronger more skilled students, but there are also students that try hard and succeed. So should we take away a sport that makes students try to work harder to stay in? No way, that is a life lesson, work hard and you will get everything you put in to it!!!!

I have already posted elsewhere here but
here goes. Dodgeball has its place. Its not
something to do for weeks. I use it as a
thing to break up monotony sometimes. IT must
be supervised closely and a soft ball is used.
Kids shouldnt really be MADE to play but Ive seen
few that didnt want to play. My one on one
beachball dodge ball is really popular and my low skilled kids win sometimes and that is really cool. Like Robert said in sports you have winners and losers. Just like life and even
in the classroom. Many times kids that excel in
the classroom aren't the stars outside and vica versa. That is the way it is. My key in PE is to do just as many different and varied things in PE so that all have a real chance to succeed and experience that feeling of accomplishment.
I then find it can carry over into activities they arent so good in. Try it and you will see
what I mean.

I remember dodgeball as my favorite activity is P.E. class growing up. I think it is great excersise and good competition. It works on dodging and fleeing and throwing and catching. It is a vigorous activity when it is played with enthusiasm.
The main reason dodgeball is not encouraged now is because it teaches students to view other students as targets. There are winners and loosers in life, but that should not be the focus of P.E. classes. The P.E. CLASS is there to encourage a healthy active lifestyle for a lifetime. If students are focused soley on winning and loosing, then loosing becomes very discouraging. Students are winners just for participating. Competitive Sports have their place, but it is not in a P.E. class. Students need encouragement and proper instruction.
Dodgeball could be modified and still be used. I like the idea of a big beach ball. A lot of small soft foam balls would also be an effective way to make dodgeball safer. The kids that need the most practice at the skills involved in dodgeball, are the ones who are knocked out of the game the fastest and sit and watch the rest of the game.
Dodgeball would be a great sports, or field day game where students have a choice of whether or not they want to participate.

Anything that gets the students excited to run around and be active is a good thing. However there should be another alternative for students that do not want to play.

I also remember dodgeball being one of mine and many students favorite activities. However, since it is an elimination game, it should be played only occasionally. The soft, sponge like balls worked great.

I agree with Robert. Dodgeball is just like every other sport. Sure you get eliminated by getting hit, but you get eliminated in every other sport you play as well. Someone will always be last picked and someone will always have to be a sub. I think we think of that being more the rules of the game so it's not eliminating someone because that's how it works in the other spots. Well, same thing in dodgeball. That's the way the game is played, you get knocked out. Honestly, when I played the more "non-athletic" kids were the heros because they are the ones that stood against the wall and caught the ball while the other "jocks" were trying to get people out and got out themselves. It turns out actually eliminating the more athletic kids or outgoing kids who tried, they are the ones more involved. So if we are going to get rid of sports that eliminate people, you better get rid of knock out because only one perosn wins in that too. Ontop of that, you will get eliminated throughout your whole life and even in the work place as you get older. Why would we shelter our kids and make them feel accepted in school growing up, when that's not how the real world is? They need to learn somewhere. I'm not saying going about it in a mean way, but they need to be taught one way or another.

Dodgeball was definitely one of my favorite activities in gym class growing up, but I agree with Esther when she said it should be played occasionally because it is an elimination game. There are different types op dodgeball though, where students can easily get back in the game or do some form of physical activity to return to the game, so that it doesn't have to be a complete elimination game.
Dodgeball is a good workout because students use every part of their body to play. They throw, run, jump, duck, and catch during game play. I think it is an appropriate activity for Physical Education as long as there are ways to keep students moving and not sitting on the sideline once they get hit.
