When I was in school, especially high school, our teachers would usually participate when we were playing sports. They usually chose to skip the fitness testing unit but other than that they always did what the students were doing. I had planned on participating in classes when I became a teacher. I think it helps to push the students to work when they have a chance to play with or against the teacher, but I keep hearing more and more that this is not appropriate. Can anyone tell me if teacher participation is ok?

I understand where you are coming from because I thought that it would be fun to participate with the students in activity as well as to make them participate because who doesnt like beating their teacher in sports. But there are some cons about this. If a teacher is involved in an activity and for instance, your playing basketball and you go to throw a pass and it breaks a girls nose; Do you know who gets in trouble WE DO. We have to be careful of saying and doing the right things as teachers or else our job can be cut. If participate and something goes wrong then your in trouble and that is why I wouldnt want to participate in any activities that I would give my students. Hope i helped out.

I think it's okay sometimes, but depends on the class. Keep in mind that if you are playing your ability to supervise will decrease.

I actively participate in my physical education classes because I feel that it motivates my students. I feel that it also has my students become more competitive even the ones that don't like sports. When I am participating I make sure that my back is to the wall and I can see my class at all times I am constantly scanning and stop at times to point out and make positive comments to my students or teams!

I often participate in my classes and as a result, 95% of my students do too. I have been able to motivate the inactive and the non-athletes because they are interested in a little competition with their teacher. I make sure that when I do step into a game, I stop it often for instructional purposes and i am always thinking about everyone's safety. In fact when teaching softball in the Spring, I feel the only person that should be pitching (for safety reasons)is me!

I agree with Jodi and Scott! I participate as much as possible with my classes (I teach 6-12 graders). My students really love it when I play dodgeball with them, it gives everyone a target to try to hit. :-) I think it is a win win for everyone, the athletes like it because they can be more competitive and brag about beating me (only in some sports they can beat me, haha) and the quieter students like it to because if they are on a team that isn't doing so good then I will play with them and help them out so they don't loose all the time. I remind my students all the time that I am twice their age and have had 2 kids so if I can do it they can do it!!

There are certain sports we play that I feel for safety reasons I should play (i.e. softball for pitching, kickball so the pitching is fair, etc.). The important thing about participating is being able to multi task! I am constantly watching the entire class and get on any kids that sit out or try to leave, I remind them that I am a mom and have eyes in the back of my head. Sometimes my principals will even come in and join us and play depending on which game it is. It is about the kids and what ever it takes to motivate them and make class fun.

I believe participation with your students is a great motivator. I do believe you have to use your own judgement on what skill/sport you are teaching because of supervision and safety. Another great idea is to send a note home to parents and encourage them to come participate with their children. Parent involvement may increase, student participation may increase, and you would have more adult eyes for supervision.

I do think participation by a teacher increases motivation and morale in the group, but I do also side with the posts that make you aware of the safety of such actions. I participate in some activities, but not a lot and my main focus is for the students to see how to play hard, but under control. If a teacher is going to choose to play, they have to remember their strength and ability level of the class. Where you might be more into a game and really excited to play others might need some time to build up the confidence to play at a harder level. I feel athletes who also teach might be more prone to play, but struggle with not knowing why all the students are not playing at that level. Remembering that we want our students to move as much as possible and that we had our gym class when we were in school is important. Keep the balance and your students will appreciate your effort.

I agree with what most people have said so far. I do not like to see a teacher simply standing on the side watching the students. I feel it's important for the teacher to get somewhat involved in the activities and show students that if you can do it, they can do it too. Physical Educators should be examples to their students and should be able to participate in activities they set up for the students to do.

I think it is very important to lead by example and participate with your students. If you are a "throw the ball out" teacher, you wouldnt get very many results you would if you were out there giving it your all everyday. It would definetly increase motivation and you can also laugh and be silly about the things people arent the best at. You can always mess up, there is always room for improvement. If your students see that you cant always be perfect, then they will understand they can try their hardest but still not be the best at an activity.
