With the increse in number of obese students we are seeing in physical education at all levels, should there be guidelines(or policy) to ensure safe participation for students as well as legal protection for educators and schools?

My district does not have a policy, but I think as a professional organization we need to investigate what is out there and come up with a policy.

Our district does not have a policy either. I think for protection of our students as well as our teachers this is an important topic to look into.

Does your district have a policy for medical excuses for physical education classes? We would like to gather as many polices as possible to use as a starting point for adding a section on obesity guidelines. Please share your school district policy on medical excuses. During the AAHPERD national convention we will have a time to come together to review these policies and begin work on the obesity guidelines. Thanks!

My district has just been successful in applying the first ever 504 accomodation plan for an obese 2nd grader. He will have an additional "adapted" physical education class that will teach him about how the body changes with exercise and information about nutrition. His 504 does not cite obesity as his major life obstacle, rather "exercise-induced asthma" which allowed us to move forward with the plan.
