I'm the district physical education coordinator for Tulsa Public Schools and the current chair for the Council for School Leadership in Physical Education (CSLPE). In my state alternative certification is a way for individuals outside of the teaching field to become certified to teach health and physical education. Individuals can make an application with the State Department of Education to become certified. In addition certified teachers with other types of certifications can take the health/physical education certification test to become certified. Concerns I have relate to quality programs, classroom management and safety. Alternative certified teachers are sometimes lacking in one or more of these areas. We need certified health/physical education teachers with an earned degree to offer quality programs not just a warm body. |
