I am preparing a survey for State PE Coordinators in order to update the Shape of the Nation report for NASPE. An issue which some have asked about is related to Alternative Certification for teachers. I would appreciate your comments in regard to this issue by responding to the following:

What is alternative certification?
What are your concerns related to it?
What other comments do you have related to alternative certification?

I would appreciate hearing from you as soon as possible since we are on a tight time frame for preparing the survey.

Thanks so much for your assistance. Roberta Stokes

I'm the district physical education coordinator for Tulsa Public Schools and the current chair for the Council for School Leadership in Physical Education (CSLPE). In my state alternative certification is a way for individuals outside of the teaching field to become certified to teach health and physical education. Individuals can make an application with the State Department of Education to become certified. In addition certified teachers with other types of certifications can take the health/physical education certification test to become certified. Concerns I have relate to quality programs, classroom management and safety. Alternative certified teachers are sometimes lacking in one or more of these areas. We need certified health/physical education teachers with an earned degree to offer quality programs not just a warm body.
