I'm doing a circus arts/juggling unit and after school program. I basically use scarves, cubes, juggling sticks, diablos, juggling boxes and spinning plates. I teach at a school with grades 1-5. 1st and 2nd graders focus on juggling one and two scarves and I introduce three and balance feathers on various body parts.. Grades 3-5 focus is on juggling three scarves, trying juggling 2 and 3juggling cubes, plate spinning, introduction to diablos and juggling sticks, balancing feathers and 4th & 5th graders experiment using juggling boxes.

Does anybody offer a unit in circus arts/juggling? and if so, what do you find successful or not successful for grades 1-5. I'm curious what others do.

Thanks for you reading my post and if you have any suggestions please email me at rlarivee@londonderry.org.

Yours in health & Wellness,

I have been teachning juggling during PE for over 15 years. I also have a juggling team which travel around performing at basketball & baseball games, festivals and other events.Students audition for the team. Students learn the basics in class and I offer a juggling club before school to 2-5 graders. We also teach unicycles. We have a juggling bulletin board outside the classroom. Students juggle scarves(30 throws of one pattern)to get their name up. The next level on the board is all three pattern with scarves(Master Juggler of Scarves) then they move to balls. A Juggler of Balls-25 throws/one pattern. A Master of Balls has to do 30 throws of cascade,30 columns, 30 reverse cascade in that order. We let Masters test anyone at a lower level. It has been very successful. I got this idea from Dave Finnigan. He has a book on juggling with lesson plans. Another great resource is Mike Vondruska!!! Our school has used him as an artist in residence for about 5 or 6 years. He is a wonderful teacher as well as an entertainer. Hope this helps.

I am about to start fieldwork for a juggling and cupstacking unit, I was wondering if anyone has any fun game ideas to play that would be suitable for grades 3-5.

Thank you

Go to diabolotricks.com for animated and written instructions on 200 diabolo skills. It also has links to juggling tricks and supplies.
