As a PE major one thing that they're stressing is that the students should be active for at least 50% of the class time. One thing they say takes up to much time is Management such as taking attendance. Any fun, faster, effective ways of taking attendance in a classroom? |

It may take some time the first week or so, But assigning them to lines or 'squads' on the floor. That way, you can quickly look down a line and see who is absent in each line. Much quicker than roll call |

Assign the students into groups and have a group leader that takes role at the beginning of class, all the group leader has to do is place a checkmark next to the name of each student in the group. |

I think having the students form a line in alphabetical order at the beginning of class is the perfect way to make attendance as fast as possible. Another creative and effective way I heard about is swiping their student ID's. A lot of high schools now have student ID's that they use to swipe for lunch and checking in at activities. If your school has these you could have the students swipe their ID as they are leaving the locker room to begin class. Or as they are entering the locker room after class. I would prefer having them swipe after class so you know that they were there for the whole class period and did not some how sneak out or skip. |

I think that the best way for taking attendance is having the students perform some icebreaker game that involves the student to say their first and last name. A simple game would be to have them stand in a cirlce and throw a tennis-ball around to each other and stay their names. Thats just one example but there are so many games and activities that students can engage in while being able to say their names out loud so you can record attendance while the students are warming up and are engaged in physical activity. |
