Hi, I am a student and have to come up with a lesson plan for basketball. The lesson plan is for elementary students. My lesson is geared toward fundamentals like passing and dribbling. I was wondering what age is appropriate to begin the fundamentals for shooting. Your comments would be appreciated. Thank you!

Ross, any age is appropriate for beginning the fundamentals for shooting but you have to remember that most children in elementary school will not be strong enough to shoot the ball the correct way so you will have to show them easier ways of shooting. Such as, a "granny shoot" or over the head shoot. Just make sure your making it fun for the children so they will try harder to perfect the correct ways.

You can start teaching the proper form for shooting at younger ages, however you need to make accomodations for the size and weight of the ball and the hight of the target. A six year old should not be using a men's basketball to shoot at a 10 foot basket.
