Hi
My name is Luciana, and I teach Elementary PE in an american school in Brazil.
I'd like to know how many classes PE teachers are used to teach a week.
I teach 24 elementary + 2 high school a week.
I'm feeling overwhemled and I would like to know if other PE teachers teach this amount of classes.

Hi
I teach 9 classes per day. We did teach 8 forty minute classes last year, but our school is growing by leaps and bounds and we had to shorten the classes 5 minutes so we could keep smaller groups. We still have up to 6 classes at a time, however, we have 5 pe teachers. |

I am the only pe person and have about 450 students prek-6th. I teach 5 classes for 40 minutes daily. On Thursday I have only 4 classes and do administrative stuff on my off time. (LUcky me!) I like my administration so it all works out well.
I used to have seven per day. Ouch. 8 per day is wicked. Look for some small back wood school. The kids will love you and you will get to know all their names in a blink not to mention lower your stress level. Good luck.

I am definately in the backwoods school.
I have about 100 kids grades k-5 and do
the PE in 4-40 min. classes 2-3 days a week.
Unfortunately, I have to do the PE for another
school but it is pretty small, too. That school
is 6-40 minute classes. The PE coach is certainly the most popular person in these schools
and always has been. |

I have 1300 students in elementary school. I have 7 periods with double classes a day. There are 2 pe teachers and we each have a full time assistant. So we see a total of about 400 kids a day and there are many days where we have to stay together because we have limited space because of portables and because of weather. |

For those of you who have so many students and classes, do you also have students with disabilities included in these classes? And if so, do you find it difficult to modify or adapt your lessons to their needs? (Im interested because this is a variable in my thesis that I am currently writing) |

Yes I have students mainstreamed into regular classes who have disabilities. I find it extremely difficult because I can't spend all my time helping just one student when I have up to 50 other kids that I need to watch. I have one student who is in a wheelchair who only has minimal use of his hands so it is very difficult when I have him. |

I have 5 classes a day...not too bad. I teach at a 400 student K-12 school and we have three pe teachers so it gets spread around pretty well. |

I have 40 classes per week. I teach at the elementary level and we see the students 2 times a week for thirty minutes. My school has about 500 students and I average 6 to 10 classes per day. It can be a bit overwhelming by Friday! |

I have the same amount of classes that you have in a week, although all of my classes are K-4. It isn't unusual since in many elementary schools of average size, only 1 PE teacher will be in charge of everyone.

I teach 90 minutes of reading and 5 or 6 classes of P.E. every day. My students only get 30 minutes per week. I serve about 600 kids per week. I also am often overwhelmed and have empathy for you! |

I teach six 40 minute classes daily: two 4th, two 5th, and then 2 3rd. I see a total of 493 students over three days; meaning, a student has PE every third school day. |

I teach K-8 and I'm feeling overwhelmed with trying to give quality PE classes and teaching to the standards. Do some of you teach a wide range of grade levels like this? I just think it's ridiculous. My class sizes are 30 or below which is nice but I go from 1st grade to 4th grade to Kindergarten to middle school, etc. Trying to keep up with the equipment and curriculum is crazy. Do some of you do this? How do you handle this? |

Julie, I teach at a K-8 school as well. My schedule is Kinder, First, Third, Sixth, Seventh, lunch, Fifth grade. I too also teach to my standards and have to keep up with the demands of equipment.
First, I try to lump my classes with the same lesson sequence. I would work on my kicking skills with the youngest kids and work on my soccer game skills for my oldest. This works pretty well throughout the year and I only have to take out equipment for the one item. At times, this is not possible since I can move through a unit in K-1 faster than I can with 5-7th. When this happens, I try and use a cart. I'll pull out all of my equipment needed for a specific class (or two) and place on the cart ready for me to pull out for a specific grade. I'll set up my class for my kinder (since I see them first) and put it away when I'm done. Have the kids help, it's not a big deal.

Thanks Matthew! I appreciate your input. I too worked my unit schedule to where the units for all grades required the same equipment. This definitely helped but was still difficult. Luckily, my admin was kind enough to start me on a new schedule teaching third through eighth grades only. They are hiring an aide for me to teach K-2. Happy New Years!!! |

I have 470 students, grades K-2. I teach 7, 40 minute classes per day, and we're on a 3-day rotation. Our classes used to be 45 minutes in length, but my classes were shortened this year to accommodate lunches in the gym. I have my lunch/planning time while the kids are in there eating. |
