Do you believe that setting up an obstacle course in the gym for your elementary school students to partake in is a beneficial way to promote fitness? Does it truly cause the heart rate to increase if its going to take up the entire class time?

I think it might be a good change of pace for kids. It will cause the heart rate to increase if it is something you've taught your kids already. Make sure to make connections throughout the lesson. Focus the students on the zone you are looking for. Have them do a writing assignment or self reflection at the end. I wouldn't do this every day but for a lesson on fitness it could be very useful, if done correctly.

I think an obstacle course is a great thing to incorporate into a routine because its not only fun for the students but it also forces the students to adapt to the adversities of the obstacle course.
